Where we work

Growing an HVAC company in Alberta

Alberta is dominated by natural gas heat and two large metros, which makes it one of the clearest places in Canada to think about the jump from one city to two. Growth here is furnace-led, and provincial programs are limited.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Alberta is furnace country, and its two big cities make it one of the most natural places in Canada to grow from one market into two. Most HVAC companies here live on gas heating work through long, cold winters. The growth path often runs from one quadrant of Calgary or Edmonton, to the whole metro and its satellites, and then to the other city.

The market and its buyers

Calgary and Edmonton hold most of the province's HVAC demand, with Red Deer, Lethbridge, Airdrie, St. Albert, Strathcona County and Wood Buffalo as important secondary markets.

In 2023, 76% of Alberta households heated mainly with natural gas and 14% with electricity, according to Statistics Canada. That makes furnace repair and replacement the backbone of most companies. Heat pumps and cooling are growing, but at the crew and full-shop stages the furnace replacement pipeline usually decides profit.

Seasonality and climate by stage

Alberta's winters are cold and long. In the south, chinook winds can bring sudden mid-winter thaws, which makes demand jumpy from week to week.

  • Stage 1: cold snaps bring more calls than one truck can take. Call coverage and clear callback times protect your reputation.
  • Stage 2: summer and early fall are the risk months. Selling furnace maintenance before October books those weeks.
  • Stage 3 and 4: with install crews, the replacement pipeline matters most. Retargeting homeowners who researched replacements in the fall pays off when the first deep freeze arrives.

Regulators to know

We link to these for reference only; confirm requirements with them.

  • Alberta's safety codes system covers gas, plumbing, electrical and other disciplines, with permits issued by accredited municipalities or the Alberta Safety Codes Authority.
  • ABSA administers pressure equipment, including boilers.
  • Compulsory certification trades are listed by Tradesecrets, which matters when you hire.
  • Alberta's Consumer Protection Act includes rules on prepaid contracting for businesses that sell away from their premises and take payment before work is complete. If home shows or canvassing are part of your growth plan, check this first.

Programs relevant to growth, as of October 2026

Alberta has fewer homeowner programs to build marketing around than most provinces.

  • No province-wide home heating rebate was found on official sources, and Alberta had no federal affordability-program agreement as of 2026-10-22.
  • The Clean Energy Improvement Program offers property-tax-based financing for efficiency upgrades, but only in participating municipalities.
  • The federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program closed to new Alberta applications on 2026-07-31.

That scarcity is a marketing point in itself: owners who explain financing and efficiency honestly, without inflated rebate claims, stand out. Confirm any program with its administrator before you mention it.

An Alberta example: the October squeeze

An illustration with round numbers. A five-truck Calgary company runs flat at about 70% of capacity from June to September, then turns away work from late October as the first deep cold arrives.

If it books 120 furnace tune-ups in August and September through a maintenance-plan push to past customers, it fills the slow weeks and, at the same time, finds the ageing furnaces that will need replacing in winter. One campaign solves two problems, which is why we put it at the centre of the crew-stage plan here.

How we'd approach growth marketing in Alberta

  • One truck and crew: build reviews and pages for the specific quadrants and suburbs you serve, and keep paid search tight to drive time. See crew-stage lead flow.
  • Full shop: separate furnace replacement campaigns from repair campaigns, and report revenue per channel, because replacement leads are worth far more. See full-shop marketing.
  • Multi-city: the Calgary-to-Edmonton move is a full launch, not an extension. Each city gets its own staffed location, Business Profile, pages and budget. Our guide to adding a second city covers the sequence.

For the numbers behind each step, see the budget-by-stage guide.

Frequently asked questions

Should a Calgary company expand to Edmonton, or into the suburbs first?

Usually the surrounding communities first, because you can serve them from your existing base and test demand. Edmonton is a full second-market launch, with its own staff, profile, pages and budget.

Are there Alberta rebates we can promote?

As of October 2026, no province-wide home heating rebate appeared on official sources. The Clean Energy Improvement Program offers property-tax financing, but only in participating municipalities. Check the CEIP site for your area before mentioning it.

Does the prepaid contractor licence apply to us?

It can apply to businesses that take payment before the work is finished and sell away from their usual premises, for example at home shows or door to door. Check with Alberta's consumer protection office; we can't advise on whether it applies to you.
