British Columbia rewards HVAC companies that treat it as several markets rather than one. The southwest coast has mild, wet winters and crowded metros; the Interior and North have colder, longer heating seasons and wide territories. At every stage, the right marketing depends on which of these you are in, and on BC rules that shape hiring and rebate messaging.
The market and its buyers
Most HVAC demand sits in the Lower Mainland, Greater Victoria and the Okanagan, with smaller centres across the Interior and North.
Gas is still the main heat for slightly more BC homes than electricity, 42% against 36% in the 2023 survey by Statistics Canada. That mix means gas furnace and boiler work sits beside a large and growing heat pump and cooling market. For a growing company, the split matters: a stage 2 crew can do well specialising in one, while a full shop usually needs both.
In the Lower Mainland, many homeowners will only call companies that can reach them quickly. Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond and Coquitlam each behave as separate search markets.
Seasonality and climate by stage
On the coast, heating demand is long but gentle, and cooling demand has become a real summer driver. In the Interior and North, winters are much colder and the heating season is longer.
- Stage 1 and 2 on the coast: shoulder seasons are long and mild, so maintenance agreements do a lot of work keeping trucks busy.
- Stage 1 and 2 in the Interior: peaks are sharper. Call coverage during cold snaps matters more than anything else.
- Stage 3 and 4: a company covering both coast and Interior can balance seasons across regions, but needs separate budgets for each.
Regulators to know
We link to these for reference; confirm your obligations with them directly.
- Technical Safety BC is the body your gas and electrical contractor licences sit with, and it also oversees boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration systems.
- SkilledTradesBC runs Skilled Trades Certification, which now covers several HVAC-related trades such as gasfitters, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics and sheet metal workers.
- WorkSafeBC handles workers' compensation.
For growth planning, the certification rules matter most. Moving from one truck to five means hiring people who hold the right certification or are registered apprentices, so recruiting runs alongside marketing.
Programs relevant to growth, as of October 2026
BC programs have changed a lot this year, so marketing about them needs care.
- The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program is the income-tested rebate stream for heat pumps and similar upgrades. For invoices dated on or after 2026-07-06, it introduced new requirements, dropped some rebates and narrowed which upgrades qualify at each income level.
- Under the federal-provincial affordability agreement announced 2026-06-29, BC Hydro and FortisBC deliver no-cost retrofits to several thousand lower-income households.
Confirm current terms with the administrators before mentioning any amount in ads or on your site.
A BC example: the bridge problem
Here is a scenario with invented numbers. A three-truck company based in Burnaby books most of its work within 25 minutes of the shop. A broad Lower Mainland ad campaign starts producing calls from Langley and North Vancouver, and each of those jobs costs an extra hour of drive time.
At roughly $150 of loaded labour cost per truck-hour, ten far-away jobs a week add $1,500 of cost that never shows up in the ad report. Trimming targeting to drive time often lowers ad spend and raises profit at the same time. That is a crew-stage lesson BC teaches faster than most provinces.
How we'd approach growth marketing in BC
Our approach in BC changes with the stage.
- One truck: a tight service area defined by drive time, a complete Business Profile and reviews that name the municipality. See the one-truck foundation.
- Crew: separate service and area pages per municipality, and paid search that excludes areas across the bridge you won't drive to. See crew-stage lead flow.
- Full shop and beyond: expansion from the coast into the Fraser Valley or Okanagan, or adding a division. GasBoilers.ca, a gas-boiler division built for CANRO Heat, now reaches 26+ BC communities, a useful model for growing across the province from an established base. See multi-city expansion.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Lower Mainland one market or many?
For marketing, many. Bridges, traffic and municipal boundaries mean a company in Burnaby and one in Surrey may barely compete. We plan service areas by drive time and build pages for the municipalities you actually reach.
How do CleanBC rebate changes affect my marketing?
Better Homes BC rewrote the Energy Savings Program rules for any invoice dated 2026-07-06 or later, and a few rebates disappeared in the process. Any page or ad that mentions rebates should be checked against Better Homes BC before it runs.
Does certification affect how fast I can grow?
It can. Skilled Trades Certification now applies to several mechanical trades, including gasfitters and refrigeration mechanics, so new hires must hold or be working toward certification. Plan hiring before you plan the marketing that needs those hires.
